Lotus Letter · No. 2 What the Horse Came For Letters from the surface · 28 August 2026, written at the Pisces eclipse
My darling lotuses,
I am writing this on the day of the eclipse, and I want to be honest with you about the year so far, because I don't think anyone else is going to be.
We were promised fireworks. Remember? This is the Fire Horse, the one that comes round once every sixty years. The wild one. The one they used to whisper about. And it did arrive exactly like that: at a gallop, all flame and noise and anything is possible, the sky lit up like New Year's Eve.
And then, somewhere around the middle of the year, the fireworks started to dim.
If you have been quietly wondering what happened to all that promise, why the year that was meant to be a blaze has felt more like hard graft and clearing out, you are not imagining it, and you have not fallen behind. You are exactly where the Horse wanted you.
Because here is what I have come to understand. The Fire Horse does not want you to have everything. It wants you to have the things you actually want. And there is no way to get to that without a sorting house: pulling every single thing out of the cupboard, laying it on the floor, and asking the hardest question there is. Do I truly want this, or have I just been carrying it?
That is what this year has been. Not a party. A clearing house. And clearing houses are exhausting and unglamorous and nobody posts about them.
And then, as if we hadn't had enough, Mercury went retrograde and, my darlings, it was a bitch. Let us not dress it up. Communications collapsed, plans unravelled, old ghosts turned up, and everything took three times longer than it should have. The good news, and it is genuinely good: that is over. The retrograde ended in late July and its long shadow cleared in the first week of August. The fog you have been driving through has actually lifted. You may not have noticed, because you are still braced.
And now, the eclipse.
Today, at ninety-six percent, a hair from total: a lunar eclipse in Pisces. Lunar eclipses do not plant. They release. And this one is in the softest, most oceanic sign there is, the sign of compassion, of dissolving, of feeling everything.
Which is why what I want to say to you today may not sound like a Pisces message at all.
Because some of you are done.
I know some of you are reading this at the exact point I am at myself. The point where you have tried, and tried, and tried again. Where you have been generous past the point of sense. Where you have explained yourself kindly, over and over, to someone who was never going to hear it. Where you have absorbed and absorbed and absorbed, because you are a good woman and good women absorb.
And now something in you has simply gone quiet and said: no. Not anymore. Enough.
My loves, hear me. That is not you failing at being spiritual. That is the most spiritual thing that has happened to you all year.
We have been sold a very small version of what spiritual means. Soft. Open. Endlessly forgiving. Love and light and one more chance. And that is part of it, but it is not all of it, and anyone who tells you otherwise has never read the source material.
The angels I work with are not soft. They are magnificent, and they are at times ferocious. Every tradition worth its salt has a figure holding a flaming sword. Compassion without a spine is not compassion. It is just availability.
So here is the Fire Horse's real teaching, and it took me all year to learn it.
The fire never went out. It went inward. It has been down there this whole time, quietly burning the year's rubbish, waiting for the moment you actually needed it.
And that moment is when a boundary has to be held.
Understand where a real boundary comes from. It is never the first move. It is the last one, the end of a long line of trying to do it gently, generously, lovingly, and being met with someone who will not respect it. Only then does the Queen turn her head. Only then does the gentle horse rear up.
No. No. No. Not anymore.
That is not cruelty. That is the fire doing precisely what fire is for.
And then, this is the part I most want you to have. Forgive yourself for it.
Forgive yourself for having to become fierce. Forgive yourself for the version of you who tried too long, gave too much, hoped past the evidence. She wasn't stupid, she was generous, and generosity is not a character flaw. Forgive yourself for the sharpness in your voice when you finally said no, and for how long it took you to say it, and for the fact that you had to say it at all.
You are allowed to be human and holy at the same time.
The people-pleasing and the ferocity are not two different women. They are the same one, and she has finally worked out which is called for.
Sometimes standing in your power means being cruel to be kind. Sometimes honouring yourself is the least serene thing you will do all year. And sometimes the most sacred act available to you is to stop being available.
You are allowed to be your own warrior. Nobody is coming to hold that line for you. And it turns out you can hold it yourself, which is a thing worth knowing at any price.
And here is why it has to be now.
Every gardener knows this. You do not prune in summer. You prune at the end of winter, before the sap rises, because whatever is still attached when the green comes will be fed. The tree cannot choose. It will pour everything it has into every branch it is carrying, dead or alive.
So you cut the deadwood first.
That is what this eclipse is for. Not cruelty. Husbandry. Look honestly at what you are still holding: the relationship that only takes, the obligation you have outgrown, the version of yourself you keep apologising for, the person who has had every chance you had to give. Ask the hard question. Is this alive, or am I just still carrying it?
Because spring is coming whether you have pruned or not. And you only want to feed what is actually growing.
Here in my valley the frost is lifting and the first green is coming up through the mud. The bare branches are being cut back this week, all over the Wairarapa, in every vineyard and orchard. It looks brutal, and it is the most loving thing anyone does for those vines all year.
The seed does its ugliest work underground, in the dark and the cold, where nobody claps. By the time you see the shoot, the hard part is already over.
I will tell you something I have been keeping close, because these letters have always been me taking you with me.
This winter, while the fireworks dimmed and the whole world did its sorting, I went into a hibernation of my own. And in that quiet, something extraordinary arrived: the seventy-two angels of the Shem HaMephorash. An ancient, ancient tradition. Seventy-two names, each a different face of the divine, each with its own gift and its own domain. They came through one by one across the cold months, and I spent this winter the way the seed spends it: underground, in the dark, learning their names. It has been the deepest spiritual work of my life, and I did it where nobody could see. Which, I am beginning to understand, is exactly how the deep work insists on being done.
And they are not all gentle either. Some of them are fire.
Now spring is days away. What came through in the dark is ready to come into the light, full force. You will feel it in this work, my darlings. Some of you already are.
One last thing.
2026 is a 1 year in numerology, a universal year of new beginnings, the first step of a whole new nine-year cycle. Many of us heard "new beginnings" and pictured something glorious.
But a new beginning is a startup. And startups are hard. Late nights, false starts, doing the unglamorous thing over and over with no audience. Nobody tells you that the first year of a new era feels less like a coronation and more like carrying boxes up a staircase. That is not the beginning going wrong, my loves. That is what beginnings look like from the inside.
And on 31 August, three days from now, Jupiter and Saturn come into a rare harmonious trine, the first of only two. Saturn is the builder. Jupiter is the dream. When they clasp hands like this, the dream finally gets scaffolding. Everything you have cleared out this year was making room for exactly this.
So: hold on. The fire dimmed because it was doing something. The sorting was the work. The retrograde is over, the eclipse is releasing what needs to go, and the ground is about to turn green.
You did not lose the year. You were being made ready. And part of being made ready was finding out how fierce you are.
I found a way to sparkle. I found joy. This is me taking you with me.
From the surface, with love,
Sarah
P.S. My reading books have opened up again, and my darlings, they have been full of the most extraordinary women. If you have been thinking about it, or you know someone in the middle of her own sorting house who needs a hand held, please forward this letter on to her. Word of mouth is how the right people find me, and every single one of them has arrived at exactly the right time. muddylotus.guru · PO Box 109, Martinborough 5741
